Windows 8.1 Metro Apps crash on opening

ISSUE:

Windows 8.1 metro apps crash when opening them. This issue occurred after a changed some security settings in the folder C:\Program files\Windowsapps


SOLUTION:

Edit the security settings in C:\ and add ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES with full permissions. When done, make sure that it also appears in the security settings of the WindowsApps folder.

Windows cannot communicate with domain or network locations

ISSUE:

Windows 7 installation already member in a domain could not find any network locations. Pinging network locations was possible though.


SOLUTION:

Removed PC from domain, but when trying to reconnect, Windows could not find the domain. The issue was resolved after installing "Client for Microsoft Networks" in the network adapter properties.

Internet Explorer 8 cannot be installed (Windows XP SP3)

ISSUE:

When trying to install IE 8 on Windows XP SP3 you get the message that a certain update is required. When trying to install that update you get the message that it is already installed.


SOLUTION:

Uninstall SP3 and reinstall it.

Office 2010 icons are blank

ISSUE:

Some, or all Office icons appear blank


SOLUTION:

- Kill Explorer.exe
- Delete C:\Users\userprof\appdata\local\IconCache.db
- Start Explorer.exe

or run the following from CMD (Administrator)

taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F
CD /d %userprofile%\Appdata\Local
DEL IconCache.db /a

then start explorer.exe via task manager

SFC SCANNOW cannot repair some files

ISSUE:

When running the command sfc /scannow you get the following result:
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some
of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not
supported in offline servicing scenarios.


SOLUTION:

Run the following command:
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Real Player downloader crashes

ISSUE:

Real Player video download plugin crashes when trying to download a video from a site (youtube for example)


SOLUTION:

Run

C:\Program Files\RealNetworks\RealDownloader\recordingmanager.exe

and update the save location in preferences.
